Advocacy 101 for Parents
-
You are your child’s best and most consistent advocate. Always remember that!
-
You have valuable information about your child – share it. Don’t assume or keep it a secret!
-
You shall put it in writing and keep a copy.
-
You shall keep records.
-
You shall try to solve problems at the lowest level but never hesitate to appeal to a higher level if necessary.
-
You shall seek out information when necessary.
-
You shall take time to digest information before making a decision.
-
You shall incorporate your agenda into theirs.
-
You shall be organized and prepared. Know the process.
-
You shall allow yourself to be less than perfect.
-
You shall not become a martyr.
-
You shall maintain a sense of humor. Have fun with your child!
-
You shall remember to tell people when they do a good job.
-
You shall encourage your child to make decisions because one day he or she will have to do so on his/her own behalf.
